Internship Opportunities
Collections Management
There are opportunities to work on a variety of projects, which may include research, exhibition, and/or collections-related tasks - including arranging and describing archival collections documenting the Museum’s permanent collection. They may also help build archival reference files for Museum staff, researchers, and scholars.
Possible Duties:
- Collect, identify, organize, and categorize archives
- Photograph, describe, and document archives
- Photograph, describe, and document artifacts
- Assist with scholarly historical research for use in Museum publications, exhibitions, and public programs, using Museum and outside sources
- Create and maintain databases of the collections
- Assist with accessioning, cataloging, numbering, condition reports and housing objects in the collections
- Assist with the care and basic conservation of objects in the collections
- Review concept documents for exhibition development
Qualifications: Skills needed vary from project to project, but can include any of the following:
- Degree or expected degree in history or museum management preferred
- Archival experience and knowledge of Photoshop is useful
- Knowledge of standard office computer skills, including database software and word processing
- Some experience with or interest in object handling, accessioning, or preservation
- Some experience with or interest in exhibition development
- Ability to work independently and on detailed tasks
Exhibits Management
Possible Duties:
- Assist in the development, production, and installation of exhibitions.
- Produce graphic design for exhibits, print materials, public programs, and online use, working mainly with InDesign, Publisher, Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Assist with scholarly historical research for use in Museum publications, exhibitions, and public programs, using Museum and outside sources
- Review concept documents for exhibition development
- Produce conceptual and detailed designs for space planning, exhibition layout, and artifact display
- Archive, label, and take art/exhibitions inventory
- Develop and update institutional database of local and regional artists
- Contact artists for exhibit submissions and help plan 2008 schedule.
Qualifications:
- Background in graphic design, architecture, industrial design, interior design, or visual arts
- Creativity; ability to work both in groups and independently
- Strong organizational and people skills
- Ability to work in a team environment and on several projects simultaneously
Arts and Museum Management
Interns have the opportunity to acquire vital skills in museum and nonprofit management by assisting with an assortment of tasks in the Center’s administrative offices.
Marketing
Possible Duties:
- Develop marketing surveys
- Facilitate focus groups
- Implement and review quantative surveys
- Distribute press materials
- Track and archive press clippings
Development
Possible Duties:
- Increase database of potential members
- Grant writing
- Analysis of constituency
- Analysis and development of reporting system on gift support history
- Create a prospect development plan including research on prospects and donors – particularly at the major gift level
- Create efficient record keeping system that provides storage and retrieval of essential data on the constituency
- Research and co-author written statements of the organization’s case, needs, and goals
- Write and assist with the creation of a corporate giving, major gift, and planned giving programs
Administrative
Possible Duties:
- Bookkeeping duties
- Assess information technology needs and write an implementation plan
- Distribute press materials
- Respond to public and media inquiries
- Compile and oversee various mailings
- Work with museum volunteers
Qualifications:
- Experience in media, public relations, or communications
- Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of desktop publishing software, online services, and digital cameras
- Ability to juggle multiple projects
- Degree or expected degree in humanities, museum studies, museum education, arts administration, non-profit management or a related field
Education, Public Programs & Outreach
Education
Possible Duties:
- Plan and implement school, family, adult, or intergenerational programs
- Retool current in-house programs as outreach activities
- Audience testing and evaluation
- Exhibition development
- Curriculum development
- Interactive Web activities
- Work in the genealogy library
- Assist researchers in house, by mail, and via email
Qualifications:
- Degree or expected degree in history, education, humanities, museum studies, museum education, fine art, art history or a related field
- Knowledge of word processing; some graphic design a plus
- Writing, research, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated interest in museum and gallery programs, education, history, and/or marketing
- Applicants interested in the genealogy library must possess knowledge of some area of library science
Education – Camp Teaching Assistant
Camp teaching opportunities are offered during spring break (for Zionsville community schools) and during the summer. Spring Break and summer camps meet at the Munce Art Center – part of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 Monday-Friday. Spring Break is a one week opportunity and summer camps occur four times during the months of June, July, and August.
Possible Duties:
- Work with the Camp Coordinator to develop multi-disciplinary art camp activities and themes.
- Assist the Camp Coordinator in creative learning activities.
- Manage administrative paperwork for camp – confirmation letters, registration, emergency contact forms and waivers, attendance sheets, and evaluations.
- Teaching Assistants will be responsible for assessing and documenting each camp through photographs and brief written reports.
Qualifications:
- Degree or expected degree in art, art education, youth development, theater, and/or non-profits.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Word programs
- Self-motivation and flexibility are imperative.
Public Programs
Public programs include festivals/fairs, films, discussions/lectures, and concerts.
Possible Duties:
- Create and implement programs
- Research possible sponsorship or granting opportunities that will help to finance the events
- Document and evaluate these programs.
Qualifications:
- Degree or expected degree in history, education, humanities, museum studies, museum education, fine arts, art history, arts administration or a related field
- Demonstrated interest in program production, museum and gallery programs, music, the spoken word, special events, celebrations, education, history, and/or marketing
- Knowledge of word processing and/or desktop publishing software
Marketing and Development
Interns have the opportunity to acquire vital skills in several administrative areas of nonprofit management, including marketing, special events and nonprofit development.
Possible Duties:
- Assist in the development, graphic design, production, and distribution of a variety of two-dimensional marketing pieces.
- Create a multimedia presentation for educational outreach opportunities.
- Create and distribute press materials, conduct market research and track press clips.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of a variety of special events and fundraising activities.
- Assist with the day-to-day management of the center’s website.
- Assist in the research and development of a variety of e-marketing and e-commerce activities.
- Maintain the donor database.
- Facilitate donor acknowledgement letters.
Qualifications:
- Experience and/or interest in any of the following areas: media, public relations communications. special event planning, and nonprofit development
- Demonstrated interest in museum programming, education, history, and/or the arts
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office products
- Must possess some specialized computer skills with graphic design and/or fundraising software programs; Adobe In-Design and PastPerfect preferred
New Media
The New Media Program strives to create experiences that cannot exist in the Center's galleries and to unite the best qualities of a Center visit with the flexibility and interactivity of online communications tools. Interns collaborate with curators, museum educators and others to assist with the day-to-day operation of the Center’s Web site and other special projects including the virtual gallery, collections information, educational activities and materials, resources for scholars, and a wide range of visitor services.
Possible Duties:
- Research and develop exhibition guides, e-postcards, websites and e-mail newsletters
- Research and gather content, including images
- Graphic design
- HTML programming
- Technology research
- Miscellaneous office work
Qualifications:
- At least upper-class college level
- Interest in history, art, museums or galleries or in using new media technologies for educational purposes
- Skill in Web graphic design or HTML programming a plus
- Good general computer skills
