Serger Basics, One Day Class

Do you own a serger? Do you want to learn how to use it? If your serger is still in its cardboard box, or away in the back of the closet, or if it intimidates you, with all of its scary moving parts, this is the class for you. The primary reason one buys a serger is to make garments look polished…more professional. Sergers eliminate that homemade look by cleanly finishing seam allowances. Plus sergers are better than sewing machines for knit fabric. Come to class with questions and leave with confidence and enthusiasm. Topics include: how to thread and operate your serger, needles, tension adjustment, seam finishes, when to use a sewing machine and when to use a serger, thread choices, curves, corners and patterns. Children, grade 5 and above, welcome if accompanied by an adult. Must have a serger in good working order. Does your serger need repair? Contact Cindy for advice  sew_handy@yahoo.com

Serger Fun, One Day Class

Do you use your serger for seam finishes but nothing else? Are you ready to step up to the next level & explore the decorative stitches a serger can do? A serger is capable of a variety of decorative edge finishes for the OUTSIDE of the garment. It’s also capable of handling threads & yarns too thick, or too fuzzy, for a sewing machine. Come to class to play then leave with confidence and enthusiasm to embellish the OUTSIDE of your next garment or home decor item. This class is for the intermediate seamstress who already knows how to thread & operate her serger. sew_handy@yahoo.com
Topics include: manipulating tension, decorative thread choices, flat lock stitch, chain stitch, rolled hem, serger chain braid, and the “accidents-versus-creative-opportunity”.

Cindy Baker - Cindy began serious sewing in 1983 when she wanted good quality and low cost maternity career wear. She also learned how to quilt and bought a spinning wheel that year. The quilting bug became permanent and she sold the spinning wheel. She finds hand quilting very relaxing and it is one of her favorite things to do.  In addition to quilting, Cindy’s other interests include wearable art, costumes, fitting and alterations, collecting and repairing sewing machines. She has approximately 100 sewing machines.
Cindy does volunteer mending at a local nursing home and also does costume making at local theaters.  She has also been a Red Cross CPR & First Aid instructor.  She is a 4-H Sewing Project Leader and hosts 9 sewing workshops a year to teach children in grades 3-12 basic sewing techniques such as darts, zippers, & buttonholes. She is also a member of the Quilters’ Guild of  Indianapolis, the Indianapolis chapter of the American Sewing Guild and Boone County Extension Homemakers.

Kae Mentz -  Kae loves to draw and paint. Growing up in northern Michigan she loved to capture details of life in nature as well as people. Developing as an artist began with her pouring over favorite images of Michelangelo and Rembrandt  in her grandfather's library. Kae’s education in fine art includes the study of Anatomy, Physiology and Kiniseology with an education degree. She has also had the privilege of learning from gifted artists both in workshops and written works. Along with a wonderful husband, four children, youth work and academics, art was on hold for 20 years. The last 10 years has her heart for art coming alive again. www.astillsmallVoice.net

Soyong Kang Partington - Soyong studied graphic design under the famous fabric designer, Jong Hwa Park and sculptor Jong Myung Hong at Sook Myung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. She was told by her own parents to study graphic design in college and not ceramics because they believed that there were already too many potters in Korea. But years later, Soyong finally gave into her desire to learn ceramics and started taking ceramic classes at the Indianapolis Art Center. Since 1988 she has either taught, monitored or assisted with ceramic classes at the Indianapolis Art Center. She participates in Broad Ripple Art Fair and has frequent one woman shows at various art galleries throughout the Midwest. Her art work is shown at well-known local galleries.
